Opelousas - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for George Stout, age 97, on Monday, May, 8, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Landry Catholic Church of Opelousas. Reverend James Brady will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will follow in the St. Landry Mausoleum in Opelousas.
Mr. Stout, a lifelong resident of Opelousas, died on Friday, May 5, 2017, at 6:45 a.m. at Opelousas General Hospital. He was born on June 22, 1919. He was a WWII Veteran who served in Germany during the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Stout owned and operated Stout Meats in Opelousas for 30 years and the Bea Theatre in Krotz Springs for over 20 years, and was active in his church and community. He was a Life member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks, and American Legion. He served as Grand Knight and District Deputy for the KCs, and Exalted Ruler and State District Deputy for Grand Exalted Ruler for the Elks. He was a member of the VFW, Cattleman's Association, Woodman of the World, and was previously a Scout Master and Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Stout helped establish the first fire department in Krotz Springs, and was honored to serve as their first Fire Chief. He also helped organize and establish the 1st Fire District in St. Landry Parish. His highest military award was the Bronze Star. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his 5 children: George W. Stout of Opelousas, La.; Gary and Becky Lowry Stout of Baton Rouge, La.; Bonnie Stout Cobb of Opelousas, La.; Donna Stout Smith and Terry Smith of Lafayette, La; and Vanessa Stout Polk of Gulfport, MS.; He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren and siblings: Julia Mae and J.E. (Tokie) Ardoin, Harold Stout, and Yola Stoute.
He was preceded in death by wife, Beatrice Stelly Stout, his parents, Valrie and Julie Stout, daughter-in-law, Verna Miller Stout and his siblings, Jake Stoute, Earl Stout, Newton Stout, Hilda Stout Joubert, Elva Stout Sonnier, Joyce Stout Dejean, and Gladys Stout Tate.
Visiting hours will be observed at Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Sunday, April 7, 2017, beginning at 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and will reopen at 9:00 a.m. on Monday until time of service.
An Elks Service will be recited at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 7, followed by the praying of the Rosary at 7:00 pm in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel.
