George H. Moore, longtime resident of Opelousas, died peacefully early September 3rd at Opelousas General Health System, at the age of 87. He was the loving husband of Evelyn Y. Moore for 64 years, and the loving father of Suzanne G. Moore of New Orleans.
Mr. Moore was born in St. Louis, MO, in 1925, but grew up mainly in Martin, TN. He joined the US Army Air Corp during WWII and served on the Pacific front as engineer with the 507th Fighter Squadron on several Pacific Islands. He earned three Bronze Stars and Presidential Unit Awards. He stayed in the Air Force Reserves and was called to serve during the Korean War as trainer in navigation and engineering. In Opelousas, he flew as Captain in the Civil Air Patrol and loved flying. For many years, he enjoyed attending the 507th reunions around the country and sustained close friendships with several other WWII veterans of that squadron.
Mr. Moore is also survived by his nephew, Cary E. Weldon of Martin, TN and his family, and niece, Maxine Wheeless of Jonesboro, AR. He is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Carol Lynn Moore, who died in 1972, and his parents, Thomas and Lillian Moore of Martin, TN. His sister was Virginia Weldon, also of Martin, TN and his brother was Allen Frank Moore of Jonesboro, AR.
He and his wife, Evelyn moved to Opelousas in 1948, where he worked as a truck broker for 35 years. He was one of the first in the area to ship yams by truck to Northern markets, along with other produce. For many years he was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Opelousas, where he also served as Deacon for 30 years. He was a Sunday school teacher, chaired several of the church committees and was active in the effort to raise and manage funds to build the new church.
He was the oldest surviving Past Master of the Humble Cottage Masonic Lodge 19 of Opelousas, of which he was a member for over 62 years and also served as Treasurer. A 30 year cancer survivor, he was once an inspirational volunteer counselor for the St. Landry Parish Cancer Association.
