George Gennuso, Sr.

Opelousas - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for George Gennuso, Sr., age 88 at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, 2017, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, with Fr. Austin Leger. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at St. Charles Cemetery in Grand Coteau.

George was a resident of Opelousas. He passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Opelousas General Health System.

George or "Pop" as he was affectionately known by everyone was born on September 19, 1928 in Washington, LA., to Sicilian parents Dominic and Anna Greco Gennuso, who met on a ship years earlier while both were traveling from Sicily to America.

George was employed for Stauffer Eshleman Wholesale Company, which was headquartered in New Orleans for 28 years. George was then able to purchase and become the proud owner and operator of the Conoco Bulk Plant and Warehouse and the Conoco Station in Opelousas, LA., for 42 years. George's passion was working at the cattle ranch farm, working in his garden, making meatballs and sauce and hosting suppers for his friends.

George was known as very kind and sweet man. He worked hard all of his life and loved his family and all of his many friends. George never needed anything fancy to make him happy.

George was a member of the National Conoco Association.

George will be mourned and sadly missed by a host of friends and family, but especially by his wife Verbie Burleigh-Gennuso of 33 years, his children, George Gennuso Jr. and his wife Grace of Alexandria, LA., Wanda and her husband, Gene LeBlanc of Ft. Worth, Texas, Kenny Gennuso and his wife Penny of Carencro, LA., Ricky Gennuso and his wife Annette of Sunset, LA, Donna Gennuso, of Lafayette, La., step daughter, Ginger Burleigh and her husband Mike Willett of Lake Charles, LA., step son, Matt Burleigh and his wife Cathy of Mesquite Texas, one sister, Ann Gennuso Brodgon of Port Arthur, Texas. George was blessed with seventeen grandchildren, twenty seven, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, along with a host of nieces and nephews'.


George was preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Anna Greco Gennuso, his former wife, Hilda Robin Gennuso, seven sisters, Josie, Mary, Frances, Sarah, Louise, Theresa and Angie, three brothers, Joseph, Sam and Frank.

Pallbearers are Kenny Gennuso, Matt Burleigh, Wayne Ardoin, Benny Ardoin, David Toussiant and Steven "Wes" West.

Honorary Pallbearers are Ricky Gennuso, Shawn Gennuso, Mike Willet, Jared Burleigh, Eric Willett, Gene LeBlanc, Blake LeBlanc, Nick Gennuso, Howard Zerangue Jr., Donald Cravins Sr., Earl Taylor, Jay Guidry, Mark Richard.

The visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, and will reopen on Wednesday morning at 8:00 a.m. until time of service.

A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening in the funeral home by Deacon Sammy Diesi.
