Mass of Christian Burial for George Stubbs Bourgeois, Jr., age 54, was held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 23, 2010, in the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Father Paul Bienvenu was the celebrant. Interment followed in Bellevue Memorial Park, Opelousas.
A resident of Opelousas, George died Thursday, May 20, 2010, at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital in Houston, Texas.
He was born June 3, 1955, in Cincinnati, Ohio. A beloved husband, father, son, and brother, George was highly esteemed by colleagues, clients, relatives, and friends throughout the community and beyond. He graduated from Opelousas Catholic High School in 1973, from USL in 1981, and from LSU Law School in 1985. As an attorney who practiced law in Opelousas for 25 years, George was a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, the St. Landry Parish Bar Association, and the Louisiana Association for Justice. He was active in civic affairs, having served as president of the Sertoma Club and having recently been appointed to the board of SLEIDD St. Landry Economic Industrial Development District.
Georges heart was as big as he was tall. He had a passion for the area in which he grew up, for the people who live there, for the youth of the community, for those less fortunate. Last summer he was a candidate for District 40 state representative, reaching out to the community toward a common purposethe improvement of our quality of life. As a member of the St. Landry Parish Indigent Defender Board, he represented indigent defendants, including juvenile proceedings and children in need of care. Over the past 20 years, George has been active in the Opelousas youth athletic community. He was a member of the Opelousas Parks and Recreation Commission and mentored young athletes as he coached both Opelousas Biddy Ball basketball teams and Opelousas Little League baseball teams, while also serving as a Biddy Ball League sponsor.
George never knew a stranger. He embraced clients and colleagues alike. His family and friends will always remember that Bourgeois humor that was uniquely George, uniquely Bourge. George had a gift for teasing in such a way that the recipient felt honored and loved. He had a vast ability to bestow a tight bear hug on an adult then to be a teddy bear with a child. He was truly a gentle man and loyal beyond measure.
George is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, his Beauty, Cindy Baque Bourgeois daughter, Alice Bourgeois Menard and her husband Jeff Menard sons, Simon Bourgeois and Stefan Bourgeois father and stepmother, Dr. George S. Bourgeois, Sr., and Jeanette Mackey Bourgeois sisters, Suzanne Bourgeois, Dr. Stephanie Bourgeois Hanson, Michele Bourgeois, Kristen Bourgeois brother, Jason Bourgeois sister, Rachal Bourgeois motherinlaw and fatherinlaw, Billy and Bettie Baque and many treasured nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and inlaws.
He was predeceased by his beloved mother, Dr. Suzanne Sally Dugas Bourgeois his paternal grandparents, L.C. Bourgeois and May Stubbs Bourgeois and his maternal grandparents, C.J. Bobby Dugas and Sue Durand Dugas.
The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Coselli, Dr. Gregorio Casar, and the critical care personnel at St. Lukes Hospital in Houston for their professional expertise and their compassionate hearts.
Visiting hours were observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 2:00 p.m.9:00 p.m. and reopened on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. until time of service. Rosary was held at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night.
