OPELOUSAS- Gary Vincent Smith, born on October 26, 1951, in Rochester, New York, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2025, at his residence in Krotz Springs, Louisiana, following a brief illness. Gary was 73 years old.
Gary proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and went on to dedicate fifty years of his life to the medical field as a skilled and compassionate X-ray technician. His career was a testament to his unwavering commitment to helping others, a quality that extended far beyond his professional life. Known for his kindness and ability to connect with people from all walks of life, Gary’s presence brought warmth and comfort to those fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Martha Hebert Smith; his son Carl Smith (Anthony); his sister Sandra Lloyd; and brothers Victor Smith (Brenda) and Robert Lloyd (Elizabeth), along with a host of nieces and nephews. Gary treasured the moments shared with his family, whether cooking Sunday dinners filled with love and laughter or bonding over music and lively discussions about current events. A lover of animals and a man who never met a stranger, he embodied generosity and an open heart.
Special gratitude is extended to Donnie Tornblom and the staff of Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care, along with Elizabeth Martin and the staff of Greene Family Medicine, for their compassionate care during Gary’s final days.
A memorial service honoring Gary’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas, Louisiana; the rosary will be recited by Deacon Dwayne Joubert at 12:00 noon.
Affectionately known as “Mr. Gary” by many, he will be remembered as a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished friend. His legacy of kindness and connection will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory bring solace to all who mourn his passing.
