OPELOUSAS – Francis Bernard Larriviere, a native of Lafayette and long-time resident of Opelousas – passed away peacefully at his home on April 30, 2021. He was 91 years of age. Francis was a member of the American Legion for 45 years.
He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seminary College of Covington in 1947. Afterwards, he enlisted in the Air Force. There he received a Humane Action Commendation for his participation in the Berlin Airlift from 1948 to 1952.
He graduated from USL Lafayette in 1956 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. From there he went on to work for Gulf States Utilities in Beaumont, TX for 36 years. He was also a participant in the local bowling league for several years.
After retiring in 1992, he and his wife Barbara settled in Opelousas. Neither would have wanted to retire anywhere else but Louisiana.
He is survived by his sons Sidney Larriviere with spouse Melanie Alo, M.D. of Houston, TX and David Larriviere of Lafayette. He is also survived by brother Hugh Larriviere, M.D. of Lafayette, sister Celine Larriviere of Lafayette, and grandsons Liam and Keenan Larriviere of Houston.
He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara Quebedeau Larriviere and his parents Bernard and Louisa Larriviere.
Services will be held at Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas on June 5th at 10:00 am with visitation to begin at 9:00 am. Following the service, there will be a procession to St. John Francis Regis Cemetery in Arnaudville for military honors and interment.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Francis’s memory to Hospice of Acadiana (2600 Johnston St., Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503) or to Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church (2125 S Union St., Opelousas, LA 70570).
