Frances Marie Higdon

Port Barre Funeral services for Mrs. Frances Marie Henry Higdon, age 85, were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2008, at the Port Barre United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Reverend Cage McLemore conducted the services.

Mrs. Higdon passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at J. Michael Morrow Memorial Nursing Home in Arnaudville. She was a native of Caseyville, Kentucky and a longtime resident of Port Barre. She was a graduate of Sturgis High School in Kentucky. She retired from working for the US Postal Service with over 25 years of service and was the Postmaster in Port Barre for 13 years. She was a loving woman and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam. And for a brief moment its glory and beauty belong to our world. But then it flies on again, and though we wish it could have stayed, we feel so lucky to have seen it....

To most who were blessed to know her, she was simply, Aunt Marie, a true, gentle, southern woman. Her other half, Uncle Loyd, often joked of having to catch Aunt Marie running through the hills of Kentucky, barefoot, and free as the wind. That image makes us chuckle we know well the spunky Kentucky spitfire we all came to know and love.

Love.

If Aunt Maries life could be summed up in one word, it would be Love. Love guided everything Aunt Marie did from every stitch painstakingly threaded through her exquisite quilts, the thousands of cakes and goodies she baked for friends and relatives, or the greeting card in the mailbox sending you hugs and kisses across the distance. She was most happy when friends and family were spilling out of all the doors and windows of her small house; laughter and childrens squeals of joy renting the stillness of a Sunday afternoon. No one ever left Aunt Maries house hungry, nor empty-handed most visitors left laden with scrumptious edibles lovingly prepared.

Well into her 70s she would make her telephone rounds on Saturday morning, and make those of us in the younger obviously slacker generation shake our head in amazement at how by 10 in the morning she had dinner cooked and waiting, 2 loads of clothes on the line, dishes washed, and the kitchen mopped. By 10 in the morning, most of us barely had one eye unglued, were perhaps on our 2nd cup of coffee, and more often than not, were still shuffling around in our bathrobe But, not Aunt Marie. She had enough life and energy to single-handedly power a small city. Her enthusiasm, compassion, and patience are legendary.

We are all better people for having known her, and changed forever for having loved and been loved by her. The softness of her cheek, the glisten of tears when her sensitive heart thought of loved ones moved on, the tinkle of laughter when her funny bone was tickled, the smile that transferred its warmth directly to your soul, the gentle hugs meant to envelope you and protect you until you met again, the tender way she cradled our babies, her steadfast faith and spirituality God was present in her life and everything she did, the beautiful way she spoiled us all rotten with her generosity These are the memories and life lessons we will always cherish from Aunt Marie.

You will never be far from our hearts and minds, and we will take comfort from our loving memories of our time together.

We love you Aunt Marie

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Loyd Higdon of Port Barre; and a host of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
