Port Barre A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Mr. Floyd Joseph Stelly. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rev. Father Daniel Picard will celebrate the Mass. The Readings for the Mass will be Deanna LeJeune and Mallory Leger. The gifts will be presented by Geraldine Fontenot and Jo Lynn Perison. Musical selections will be provided by Chuck Stelly.

Floyd was a native and longtime resident of Port Barre, LA. He passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at his home at the age of 77.

He was a U. S. Air Force Veteran who proudly served his country during the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict. He participated in the 1973 mission to pickup American P.O.W.s on C141 planes in Hanoi North Vietnam. He flew extremely hazardous missions through adverse weather conditions and through the constant threat of hostile ground fire and attack. Through his personal bravery and energetic application of his knowledge and skill, he significantly furthered the goal of the United States in Southeast Asia. He was a member of the 607th AC W Squadron, 615th AC W Squadron, and 311 AIR Commando Squadron. He retired from the U. S. Air Force in 1974. Some of his honors include the following: the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Medal, Korea Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Korea War Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Vietnam Service Ribbon. He was a member and commander of the Reed Davis Honor Guard, American Legion Post 334 of Port Barre, member and previous commander of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 8678 of Port Barre, and the Air Commandos.

He also retired from the United States Postal Service in 1998 with over 23 years of service. During his career at the postal service, he was also a member of the APA and served as a counselor.

He was on the Boxing Team in High School and then further became the Boxing Coach of the St. Landry Boxing Club. He enjoyed being outdoors traveling all over the world and across the states, exercising and walking, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He looked forward to his gatherings with his family and friends. He was fun loving and had a comical personality. He lived his life to the fullest and cherished each moment. He lived a fulfilling and accomplished lifestyle. He especially enjoyed the company of his dog, Rea.

He was a member of Alcoholic Anonymous for over 40 years. He was an addiction counselor who helped people with addictions at any time. His life was centered towards helping others during their time of need because everyone mattered to him. He touched so many lives and went above and beyond to help others and changed so many lives.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Port Barre and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Betty Fontenot Stelly of Port Barre one son, John Anthony Stelly of Tacoma, Washington two daughters, Vickie Denise Stelly Duplechain and husband, Bob of Port Barre and Hope Marie Stelly Ramirez and husband, Johnny of Denver, Colorado one sister and godchild, Geraldine Jerry Fontenot and husband, Shelton of Baton Rouge three grandchildren, Tommy Duplechain of Port Barre Bobby Duplechain and fianc, Morgen Harris and Mark Duplechain and his girlfriend, Mallory Leger all of Port Barre one greatgrandchild, Lane James Duplechain of Port Barre also three more godchildren, Jo Lynn Perison, Deanna LeJeune, and Bill Hernandez two step grandchildren, three step greatgrandchildren, and an abundance of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton Stelly and Emma Guillory Stelly one son, James Michael Stelly two daughters, Suzanne Marie Stelly and Faith Marie Stelly one brother, Larry Stelly and one sister, Joyce Stelly Bertrand.

Pallbearers will be Bob Duplechain, Johnny Ramirez, Mark Duplechain, Bobby Duplechain, John Stelly, and Tommy Duplechain. Honorary pallbearers will be Lane Duplechain, Morgen Harris, Mallory Leger, and Shelton Fontenot.

Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Port Barre on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, from 5 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. On Wednesday, visitation will continue from 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening in the funeral home.
