Port Barre-A Mass of Christian Burial for Ms. Esther Smith Stanford will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Port Barre. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery Mausoleum with Fr. Daniel Picard as the celebrant.
Ms. Stanford was a native of Church Point and a lifelong resident of Port Barre. She died on Friday, January 2, 2015, at Prompt Succor Nursing Home in Opelousas at the age of 92. She was active in her Rosary Group and a parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Her special achievement was her faith in God and family. She enjoyed gardening, cooking on Sunday lunches for her family, shopping with the family, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a devoted wife and a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include one son, Gilbert "Fuzzy" Stanford of Port Barre; two daughters, Janice Meche and husband, Malcolm of Port Barre; and Bobby Fredette and husband, Richard of Carencro; one brother, Paul Smith of Cottonport; her daughter-in-law, Gayle Stanford of Port Barre; 12 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 9 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Stanford; her parents, Gilbert Smith and Bernadette Simar Smith; her son, Benjamin Stanford; four brothers, Lawrence Smith, Charles Smith, Placide Smith, and Lloyd Smith; and two sisters, Edalie Weber and Lydia Lavergne.
Pallbearers will be Randy Bartee, Cody Stanford, Tommy Stanford, Sean Stanford, Andrew Guidroz, and Connor Stanford.
Visiting hours will be held in the Sibille Funeral Home of Port Barre on Sunday, January 4, 2015, from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. A Rosary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. The funeral home will reopen on Monday at 8:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
