Elton Mire

November 19, 1915 — February 23, 2007

Faith is the belief that God is real and that God is good.... Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it.br brKAPLAN - Funeral services for Elton Mire, 91, were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, February 26, 2007, with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church. Interment followed in the Kaplan Cemetery. Rev. David Broussard officiated the services.brbrMr. Mire, a native and life-long resident of Kaplan, died on Friday, February 23, 2007, at his residence in Kaplan.br brDuring his early age, he learned the hardships of life on a small family farm. He did his share of picking cotton, digging sweet potatoes, working in the rice fields, helping with all the livestock. Growing up when there was no electricity, no running water, phones, radio, television, and no indoor plumbing, is what built his foundation for life and made him that great in
idual.br brAmong his many interests was farming, vegetable gardening, and listening to French music. In his spare time, he enjoyed baking cornbreads, and canning figs, pears, and mirlitons. He was always determined to produce a vegetable garden or fruit trees in order to share with his family, neighbors, and friends. Everyone knew that when you would go by to visit him like he would say to us, even though it is just for a few minutes... or if he would come by to visit us, he would always make sure you had something from him which was usually either in a bag, a bowl or wrapped in foil.br br He gave generously of his time and energies to his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the company of the little ones. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by many people who had the opportunity to know his gentle soul and kind heart. br brHe was a member of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church in Kaplan. He was a faithful and devout Catholic until his death. br brLeaving behind to cherish many wonderful memories are his two sons: Gerald Mire and companion, Doris Boudreaux of Houma; and Marion Mire and wife, Beverly Blanc Mire of Kaplan; his daughter, Shirley Mire Bourque and husband, Donald Bourque of Kaplan; four brothers: Edward, Lloyd, Harry and Harris Mire, all of Kaplan; one sister, Helen Broussard, of Abbeville; 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.brbrHe was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Edmay Hardy Mire; one granddaughter, Susan Mire; his parents, Theonice Mire and the former Olite Mire; five brothers: Ellis, Allison, Ernest, John Revis, and J. L. Bob Mire; one sister, Olive M. Romero; and one daughter-in-law, Kathleen R. Mire.brbrVisitation was observed at Vincent Funeral Home, 300 Eleazar Ave, Kaplan, 337 643-7276 on Sunday from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. On Monday, visitation continued from 8 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. in the funeral home. A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening in the funeral home.brbrHis grandchildren honored him as Pallbearers and Honorary Pallbearers.br brWords of comfort to the family may be expressed at www.sibillefuneralhomes.com. br brFuneral arrangements have been entrusted to Sibille Funeral Home, 2309 George Drive, Opelousas, LA 70570 337 948-6523.br
