Ellis Harvey Tinney
Opelousas Funeral services for Mr. Ellis Harvey Tinney, age 86, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2010, in the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel. Internment will follow in the Cedar Hill Cemetery of Washington.
Rev. Perry Hubbs will officiate the service.
Mr. Ellis was born on December 14, 1923, to the union of Frank A. Tinney and Alice Mae Ingram in the Potter Township, Yates County, New York. He graduated from Penn Yan Academy in 1941. He entered the Army Air Corp. in 1942. He was trained as a B17 mechanic, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was then honorably discharged in Feb. 1946. He was married to the former Ruby B. Shuff on July 28, 1946. He earned a B. S. degree at Northwestern State College in December 1951. He was employed by the LA Dept. of Welfare in 1955 as a welfare investigator, 1957 a Probation Officer, 1959 a Juvenile Probation Officer, 1965 An Administrative Assistant in the Food Stamp Program, 1969 Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the blind. In 1975 he served as President of the LA Rehabilitation Association. He was supervisor of Services for the Blind in Baton Rouge area until his retirement in June 1979.
He was a member of the Opelousas First Baptist Church and the American Legion Post of Washington, LA. He was a carpenter and enjoyed doing woodworking and using his tools in the shop in his spare time. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He died on Saturday, August 7, 2010, in the Heritage Manor of Opelousas.
Survivors include his two sons, Robert F. Tinney and wife, Susan of Washington, LA and Wilfred E. Bill Tinney and wife, Linda Berryman of Pearland, Texas one brotherinlaw, Lawrence Caward of Stanley, New York three grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ruby B. Shuff Tinney his parents, Frank A. Tinney and Alice Mae Ingram Tinney one brother, Donald H. Tinney and one sister, Norma J. Tinney Caward.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Saturday, August 14, 2010, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
