Ed, a native of Opelousas began his journey to his Heavenly home on September 26, 2020. All who knew him, knew him as a quiet man and he left quietly from his home early Saturday morning.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris Comeaux Stelly; children: Nina Stelly Seraille (Donald) and Carlos Mark Stelly; siblings J.P. Stelly (Joyce) all of Opelousas; Calvin Stelly (Margaret) of Burnett Texas; Roma Gail Stelly Ramey (Tom) of Georgia; sister-in-law, Brenda (Comeaux-Smith) Soape (Jack) of Opelousas; grandchildren: Myretia Seraille and Donita (Seraille) Jackson (Tremane); 5 great grandchildren; extended family member Andrew Padilla; and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Ed is predeceased by his parents Dominick and Octavia Stout; Eddie Stelly and Agnes Stelly; father and mother-in-law, George and Gladys (Joubert) Richard, Opelousas; father-in-law Joseph Wallace Comeaux (Marie), Odessa, Texas; nephew Theodore “Ted” Stelly.
Ed attended LSU-Baton Rouge, McNeese- Lake Charles and SLI (“UL”)- Lafayette, obtaining a master’s degree. He pursued a career as a teacher, then later accepted a position with the Louisiana Department of Health and Resources. After 40 plus years, he retired with the title of supervisor.
His hobbies included photography, golfing, genealogy research and writing. He wrote a book on his biography and family history. He held a book signing at the local library which interested many residents in Louisiana and Texas where he reunited with relatives and found “long lost relatives”.
Ed was very involved in the Lords work. He served as a Deacon, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Gideon member and visiting preacher, attended many conferences while a member at the Opelousas Bible Church and First Baptist Church of Opelousas. After church, Ed devoted his Sunday afternoons visiting the residents at the Senior Village Nursing Home. He preached sermons there while accompanied by his mother-in-law, Gladys (Joubert) Richard, who sang (French and English songs) and with Sharon Soileau at the piano.
Pallbearers include Carlos Stelly (son); nephews: Roger Stelly, Eddie Stelly, Baxter Smith, Bart Smith; friends: Andrew Padillo; and close church friends Gary Billeaudeau and Gary Berringer.
A celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church of Opelousas, with pastor Perry Hubbs officiating, on October 8, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with burial to follow in Bellevue Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their condolences and prayer. They also extend their gratitude to the Fire Department, Sherriff’s Department, EMS and the OGH E.R. staff.
