Dr. Lazaro was a native and longtime resident of Opelousas. He passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette at the age of 75. He was an orthopedic Surgeon for many years.
Butch and Mrs. Kay were high school sweethearts and attended S. L. I. together. During the summer of 1962, they were married. He came from a strong Medical background in which his father and both grandfathers were physicians. He was a graduate of S. L. I. and L. S. U. Medical Center in New Orleans. Butch was a flight surgeon in the Air Force Reserves and was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base as a Captain. He attended his internship at Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport. His Orthopedic residency was at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He further subspecialized in surgery of the hand attending a fellowship at the University of Virginia. He established a practice in general orthopedics in Opelousas in 1969, cofounding the Opelousas Orthopedic Clinic with Dr. Robert Luke Bordelon and Dr. Frederick Lionel Mayer. Over the years, his practice gravitated more specifically to orthopedic surgery of the hand and he eventually went on to become one of the original founders of Southeastern Hand Society. He was a founding member of the Acadiana Orthopedic Society and was a member The American Society for Surgery of the Hand ASSH. He was one of the early owners of the Old St. Landry Clinic and became one of the original founders of Doctors Hospital. He was one of the original founders of the First National Bank and part owners of the Senior Village Nursing Home.
He was an avid salt water fisherman and for many years a fixture of the landscape at Cypremort Point. He was also known as for his affinity for collectible sports cars.
As a pastime, he enjoyed traveling in this motorhome with his wife, Kay and his many friends. Throughout his many travels, he compiled a huge collection of old medical instruments and artifacts which were donated to the Opelousas Historical Museum.
He had been retired for 18 years and was a known Regular at the Crawfish House and Grill where he often spent hours moving from table to table socializing with his many friends. He was a wonderful, loving, and caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
