Doyle Wayne Bergeron
Opelousas A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Doyle Wayne Bergeron, age 55, will be Celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Church Point, LA with the Reverend Fr. Blair Sabaricos Celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas.
A native of Church Point and a resident of Fort Worth, TX, Wayne passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at the Acadia-St. Landry Hospital in Church Point, LA.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. For many years, Wayne worked in the Public Relations and the Sales arena of the oilfield industry.
After battling cancer several times, Wayne became a strong Cancer Survivor Group Leader and was actively promoting Cancer awareness with many different organizations including M. D. Anderson, LA Oncology Association, and Opelousas General Health System. He was the recipient of the Spirit Stick for Cancer Survivors as well as a participant in numerous marathons running to help raise money for cancer research. He was an active volunteer with oceanography cancer and clinical research where he worked with dolphins on cancer research projects for both the Marine Life Center in Gulfport, MS, and Sea World. He was also a member of the Advisory Board for LA Coure De LEsprit DAcadiana Acadiana Spirit Run of which he helped promote several events to help raise money for in
iduals in wheelchairs.
Wayne was the Founder and President of N.O.R.A. National Outdoor Recreation Association, an organization designed to allow the handicap, disable and the blind enjoy and become active with many outdoor activities. Whether it was hunting or fishing, Wayne was as avid an outdoorsman as they come, and he was extremely dedicated in helping those in
iduals with disabilities to be able to enjoy the outdoors as much as himself.
A devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Wayne will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Robin Thompson Bergeron of Ft. Worth, TX; one daughter, Nicole Bergeron Wimberly and husband, Bill Wimberly of Branch; one son, Alton Al John Bergeron of Lafayette; his parents: Alton Junior Bergeron, Jr. and Ethel Labbie Bergeron of Church Point; one stepdaughter, Cara Savage and husband, Tracy of Ft. Worth, TX; and Joshua Josh Sanders and wife, Stephanie of Youngsville, LA; one sister, Brenda Pourciau and husband, George of Church Point, LA; four granddaughters: Mallory, Sierra, and Avery Wimberly; and Maci Bergeron; and one step-grandson, Caleb Savage.
Pallbearers will be Alton Al Bergeron, Bill Wimberly, Hugh Daigle, Cullen Daigle, Jerrod Daigle, Ken Venable and Joshua Josh Sanders.
Visiting hours will be observed from 7 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. on Friday, February 22 in Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Saturday, visitation will continue at 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home.
A Rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening in the funeral home.
