OpelousasA Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy Raborn Ventre, age 93 will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2014, in St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. Rite of Committal and interment will follow in the St. Landry Cemetery with Fr. James Brady as the celebrant.
A native of Texas, Dorothy loved Louisiana and made Opelousas her home for more than 60 years. In the 1960s, she owned and operated the Play Skool Kindergarten at the family home. Dorothy later worked at Abdallas Dept. Store as cosmetics and gifts dept. manager. Following the years at Abdallas, she worked at Bealls Dept. Store. Lastly, she owned and managed Serendipity Gift Shop in Opelousas before finally retiring. For the last 12 years, she has lived at the Windsor Senior Living Community in Mandeville, where she fought a long battle with vascular dementia. Dorothy died on Tuesday, December 16, 2014.
Throughout her life in Opelousas, besides raising her children and working, Dorothy was very socially active and was instrumental in the Opelousas Garden Club for more than 50 years, the Opelousas Junior Garden Club, the Mardi Gras Bal Masque and Debutante Coterie for many years, and the St. Landry Catholic Church Altar Society and the bible study group.
Dorothy has a zest for life and enjoyed doing so many things besides working including shopping, collecting, decorating for holidays, cooking and baking, and giving parties in her younger years. Her passion for flowers and flower design remained with her to the end.
Tribute is made to the staff and residents of the Windsor who added to Dorothys quality of life in Mandeville. The family is so very grateful to them.
She is survived by her five children: Dot Ann Richard of Covington Barbara Ventre of Mandeville Robert A. Ventre, Jr. and his wife, Debbie of Bunkie Elizabeth Ventre of Baton Rouge Patrice Bagby and her husband, Jim of Amite her soninlaw, Donald Devillier of Greenwell Springs twelve grandchildren and sixteen greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by one sister and one brother living in Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert A. Ventre her daughter, Dina Devillier and her soninlaw, Francis Richard.
Visiting hours will be held in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas on Friday, December 19, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and will reopen on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. until time of service at 9:30 a.m. A rosary Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home.
