Dorothy Mayer

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, January 10, 2013 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington, Louisiana for Dorothy Ann Mayer, 85, who passed away at her home on Sunday, January 6, 2013.

Rev. Father Albert Nunez will celebrate the mass with interment following at St. Landry Cemetery.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Patricia Johnson of Burleson, TX, Jules Delaune of Washington, DC, Robert Delaune of Round Rock, TX, Raymond Mayer of Washington, LA, Mary Prejean of Washington, LA, David Mayer of Lafayette, LA, numerous great nieces, great nephews, greatgreat nieces and greatgreat nephews.

Mayer was preceded in death by her parents Valery Mayer and the former Louise Melancon, both natives of Port Barre, her brothers and sisters, Helen Williams, Hilda Billeaudeau, Ira Mayer, Hugh Mayer, and Berince Delaune, and one nephew, Jimmy Golden.

Born in Eunice shortly after her parents left Port Barre following the great flood of 1927, Mayer moved to Washington with her family as a teenager and lived there for the rest of her life.

Mayer taught school for six years then became librarian for nine at Grand Prairie High School and five years at Opelousas Junior High School. During her tenure as teacher, Mayer was also the girls basketball coach at Washington High School. She remained an avid sports fan her entire life.

Mayer became Administrative Librarian for the OpelousasEunice Public Library on January 1, 1970 and held that position until retirement on December 31, 1986.

Mayer was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the international honorary teachers society and the Louisiana Library Association. In 1972, Mayer was awarded the Modisette Award for public libraries. During her 16 years as a public librarian, Mayer was instrumental in the planning and completion of a permanent home for the Eunice Public Library. Mayer also prepared and completed the application that was approved for the twoyear pilot Bayouland Library System which has been functioning since 1974. In 1975, Mayer was named an honorary member of the St. Landry Parish School Librarians Association.

In addition to her work with libraries, Mayer was actively involved in the Historic Washington Society. She served as a member of the board do directors for the organization and was treasurer for more than 10 years. Mayer helped prepare the nomination forms for Washington to be placed on the National Register of Historical Places that was approved in 1978.

Mayer was one of the founding members of the Washington Garden Club and served in many capacities. The club received many many local, parish, and state awards under her leadership.

Mayer was a recipient of the Athena Award, a prestigious award presented to an outstanding St. Landry Parish woman.

Upon retirement as librarian, Mayer owned and operated Acadian Connection Antique and Gifts and la Chaumiere Guest Cottage hosting visitors from around the world.

Mayer served as councilwoman for the Town of Washington for many years. She was dedicated to the preservation of historic sites in the town for the enjoyment of future generations. As an avid supporter and promoter of tourism for Washington, Mayer collaborated with writers and authors covering Historic Washington and was meticulous about archiving and preserving information and records. Mayer took great pleasure attending cultural events in the area. She served as a council member of the Immaculate Conception Parish Council for many years and was also a Eucharistic Minister.

Dot, as she was fondly known to many, was a promoter of the American ideals. She was generous with her resources and with her time.

Mayer was dedicated to her family, hosting uncountable family activities and supporting her familys many endeavors whole heatedly. Her unconditional love will be cherished and missed.

Pall bearers will be Raymond Mayer, Trent Mouton, Jessica Mayer, David Mayer, Andrew Mayer, and Eric Prejean.

Visitation will be at Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. A rosary service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
