David Douglas Doug Nelams, Sr.
Port Barre Funeral services for Mr. David Douglas Doug Nelams, Sr. , 64, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2007, with a Mass of Christian Burial in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the Port Barre. Interment will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Port Barre. Father Nicky Trahan will conduct the Mass.
Mr. Doug was a native of Church Point and a long-time resident of Port Barre. He died on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at 9:00 a.m. in the Opelousas General Health System. He was a U. S. Army Veteran and a member of the American Legion. He was a chief engineer and tug boat captain for Edison Schouest for many years. He was also a member Odd Fellows' Rebekahs' and past Grand Secretary of the Oddfellows' and past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs'. He enjoyed music and playing the accordion. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his father, Daniel David Nelams and stepmother, Faye of Buna, TX; three sons: David Douglas Nelams, Jr. and wife, Christine of Youngsville; Newton James Nelams of Church Point; and Russell David Nelams of Lafayette; step-sons: Gerald Keith Savant and wife, Marcia of Arnaudville; and Michael Lloyd Savant and wife, Dana of Port Barre; three daughters; Dawn Crotwell of Lockport; Michelle Nelams of New Iberia; and Donna Haugen and husband, Robert of Carlsbad, NM; one step-daughter, Regana Marie Rester and husband, John of Baton Rouge; one half-brother, Harry David Nelams and wife, Shannon of Beaumont, TX; four sisters: Geraldine Parker and husband, Eddie of Maryland; Bernadine Nelams of Opelousas; Pat Wiggins and husband, Jimmy of Buna, TX; and Carolyn Nelams and huband, of Buna, TX; companion, Alice Faye Wise of New Iberia; 14 grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 10 step great-grandchildren.
Robbie Melancon and his wife, Angel of New Iberia are also special in his life because Mr. Nelams raised and cared for him like a son.
Mr. Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Iris Lyons Guidry; his stepfather, Walter Paul Guidry; brother, John Dale Nelams; first wife, Barbara Ann Guidroz; and third wife, Norma Jean Ardoin Savant Nelams.
