Cornelia Taylor Richard
Grand Coteau Funeral services will be held for Cornelia Taylor Richard, 101, at 1.00 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Grand Coteau. Father James Lambert will celebrate the Mass. Interment will follow in St. Charles Cemetery.
Cornelia Richard, known to everyone as Sis, was born May 22, 1909 in Grand Coteau where she lived most of her long and active life. She died December 16, 2010 at Senior Village Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. She was educated at the Academy of the Sacred Heart and earned her Bachelors degree at Southern University in 1958 at age 49. She served as an elementary teacher with the St. Landry Parish Schools for 41 years and generations of students valued her caring and nurturing instruction. She was a devoted servant of the church and was generous and supportive of others in need, volunteering her time at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home among many other organizations. She also served as an alderman of the Town of Grand Coteau and was a longstanding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Peter Claver. In her spare time, she loved to cook, crochet, quilt, tend to the flowers in her garden and welcome the many visitors to her home who valued her warmhearted spirit and caring nature.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Rees, and husband Peter, of Wilmington, Delaware daughterinlaw Wilda Richard of Grand Coteau five grandchildren, John Everett Richard and wife Lauren of Dallas, TX, Russell Vaughn Richard and Cherelle Darby and husband Paul, all of Houston, TX, Annette Pero and husband Marc of Lutcher, and Janet Etienne of Towson, MD and nine greatgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Taylor, Sr. and Celeste Murray Taylor, sister Leona Senegal, brothers Joseph Taylor Jr., Thomas Taylor, Charles Taylor, Walter Taylor, Laurence Taylor and son Russell Richard, Jr., all of Grand Coteau and grandson William Etienne of Newark, DE.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the enormous support provided by niece Jeannette Williams to Mary Hansberry and the staff of Hansberry Adult Healthcare, for continuous concern for her wellbeing and to Shirley and Geeny who cared for her during her most recent illness to Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care who made her end of life peaceful and to Dennis Driscoll and the staff of Senior Village Nursing Home whose concern for her welfare made her final years ones of pleasure and comfort.
Visiting hours will be observed in the Sibille Funeral Home of Grand Coteau on Saturday, December 18, 2010 from 9.00 a.m. until time of service.
