Clara Lindsly D'Avy

Opelousas-A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Sibille Funeral Home Chapel for Clara Lindlsy D'Avy. Deacon Tom Lindsey will conduct the Funeral Service. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery in Opelousas.

Ms. Clara was a resident of Opelousas and passed on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at her home, at the age of 93. Clara was born in New Roads to Lewis Lindsly, Sr. and Clara Paille, the sixth of seven children. She graduated from Poydras High School and worked for several years in New Roads before her marriage and re-location to Opelousas. Clara spoke fondly of her growing up and young adult years with family, good teachers, many school friends, enjoying basketball games, movies, radio and dances. She appreciated her employers and they, in turn, appreciated her. While waiting for her fiancé, Clayton, to return from service in France in World War II, Clara was active in support of the home effort. She wrote faithfully to Clayton and kept all of their correspondence from those years.

Clara and Clayton were married sixty-two years and together raised nine children. Clara was a busy, talented and loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, involved in her family's activities at Opelousas Catholic school (formerly AIC) and parish church, always making sure they had everything they needed and offering her encouragement and enthusiasm, being a role model simply by being herself. Clara referred to herself as a "country girl". She had a friendly and positive, optimistic personality. She sang around the house and in the church choir. Clara belonged to the Altar Society, bowling league and a local homemaker club. She used many skills passed on from her mother: sewing, cooking baking and canning, growing flowers, and caring for children. Clara was generous and loving toward her parents, siblings and their families as well as to Clayton's.

Clara traveled with Clayton to many destinations, as well as on family vacation. After the children left home, Clara and Clayton made visits to family near and far, and their home was always open to company. Clara especially enjoyed when babies and children were brought to visit and play. In later years the D'Avy home was a gathering place for relatives and friends and a "home away from home" for immediate and extended family. Clara and Clayton also sponsored a young Vietnamese refugee family who lived in Opelousas for many years.

Clara is predeceased by her beloved Clayton, parents, sisters Agnes L. Normand and Ann L. Hannaman, and brothers, Lewis, Jr., Felix, and Clarence Lindsly, and by grandchildren, John Alexander and Lisa Harawi. Survivors include Clara's sister, Alice L. Singleton, Baton Rouge, and sister-in-law, Jacqueline D'Avy, Cave City, KY and by her children and their spouses; Don D'avay and Faith Stanford, Opelousas; Dianne D'Avy and Peter Mutty, Baton Rouge; Dane and Mary Ann D'Avy, Alexandria, Darryl and Lenny D'Avy, Broussard; Cathy and Samir Harawi, Zahle, Lebanon; Chris and Susan D'Avy, New Iberia; Vicki and David Hill,
Rhome, TX; Tim and Diana D'Avy, Deltona FL; Jeanne Louviere, Lafayette, and fiance' Mike McElwee, West Monroe. Clara is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends.

The family wishes to thank caregivers Audrey Cummings, Annabelle Jones, Tikia Jones, Delaine Richard, Stephanie Lewis and Pam Benoit, as well as Dr. Richard Tate and his staff, Dr. Tammi LaGraize, the staff of Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care of Opelousas, and to Deacon Tom and Mrs Patty Lindsy, a very special thanks. Visitation will be held at Sibille Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Home will reopen on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. until time of Service at 10:00 a.m. A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Ms. Clara's grandchildren will serve as her Pallbearers.
