Opelousas Funeral services for Chief David Gerald Richard, 53, will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 7, 2007, in the First Baptist Church 3835 I-49 South Service Road, Opelousas. Interment will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Port Barre.
Rev. Perry Hubbs, Rev. Jerry Adams, and Rev. Joe Russo will officiate the services.
Mr. Richard was a native of Opelousas and a resident of Port Barre. He died on Sunday, August 5, 2007, due to an automobile accident in Port Barre.
He completed the Police Academy and worked part-time with the Port Barre Police Department in 1974. In 1984, he joined Opelousas Police Department and retired from his many years of service. In 2002, he was elected as Port Barre Police Chief and was reelected for a second term in 2006. As chief, he started an Inmate Work Program in Port Barre; implemented an Elderly Assistance Program which assists with transportation and general help for the elderly, implemented the First Resource Officer Program at Port Barre High School, and was able to get new police cars for the department and fund a new police station. He served a total of 32 years in law enforcement.
David loved life and lived it to the fullest. Family was his life and meant everything to him. He adored his grandchildren. He also coached youth baseball which was one of his greatest joys. He never met a stranger and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Trudy Grimmett Richard; two sons: David G. Bubba Richard and Willis Jordan Richard; two daughters: Delainey Estis and husband, Brad; and Sicily Quebedeaux and husband, Chad; all of Port Barre; his parents: H. L. and Maggie Richard of Opelousas; one brother, Carl Richard of Mobile, Alabama; one sister, Sherry R. LeBas of Lafayette; and five grandchildren: Haley Richard, Jaci Estis, Adam Estis, Conner Quebedeaux, and Camille Quebedeaux.
Pallbearers will be David G. Bubba Richard II, Willis Jordan Richard, Chadd Quebedeaux, Brad Estis, Carl Richard, Kevin Grimmett, Robbie LeBas and Shane Reed.
The honorary pallbearers will be past and present Port Barre Police Officiers, Connie Quebedeaux, and Adam Estis. The St. Landry Parish Sheriff Department and the Opelousas Police Department will serve as the Honor Guard during the services.
Visiting hours will be observed on Monday, August 6, 2007, from 5 p.m.-10 p.m. in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas. On Tuesday, visitation will continue in the funeral home from 8 AM until 1:30 p.m.
A Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday in the Sibille Funeral Home of Opelousas.
