Carrol Dugal Lavergne
Opelousas - A Mass of Christian Burial for Carrol Jean Dugal Lavergne will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, in the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Fr. Greg Simien will celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park.
It is with great sadness that the family of Carrol announces his passing on Friday, July 15, 2016 at the home of his daughter, at the age of 86.
Carrol loved nature and loved to work. These traits served him well in his more than fifty years as owner and operator of Lavergne's Dairy near Lewisburg, Louisiana. After selling his herd and closing the dairy, he did not want to completely retire so he raised beef cattle until 2014. He was named Outstanding Dairy Producer at the 30th Louisiana Dairy Festival in 1978 in Abbeville. LSU's Dairy Science Club awarded him the title of Dairyman of the Year in 1991-92. He was also named Rotary Specialty Farmer of the Year in 1975, given the Outstanding Forage Award in 1976 by the Louisiana Forage Council, and was named Mr. Farm Bureau in 1983 by St. Landry Parish Farm Bureau. Carrol served on the boards of several organizations. He was President of the Bellevue and Coulee Crouche Drainage District in St. Landry Parish until last month and a member and director of Dairymen, Incorporated, Dairy Farmers of America, Federated Genetics Board, and St. Landry Parish Farm Bureau. He served as President of the Board of Southwest Feed and Farm Supply until December 2015. He was also a member of American Legion and Louisiana Animal Breeders Corporation. He was a commissioner for elections. He loved his Catholic faith and served since 1976 as a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church.
Carrol also had a deep love of his country and proudly volunteered to serve in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. He earned the rank of Storekeeper 2nd Class Petty Officer and spent his tenure aboard minesweepers. His patriotic spirit remained fervent throughout his lifetime.
Even more than his love of nature, work, and his country, Carrol was a devoted and proud husband and father. His heart was broken and his life never the same after his wife of almost sixty years passed away sixteen months ago. He was an outstanding storyteller and had a great sense of humor. He loved LSU football, country music, and singing. He passed on the value of hard work to his children. He was a gentle and kind man who enjoyed an optimistic outlook on life. He was outgoing and social and enjoyed the friendships of many.
He will be greatly missed by his loving children Vaughn Lavergne and wife Sharon of White Hall, Arkansas, Paula Pearson and husband, Dr. Charles Pearson, of Lafayette, Fred Lavergne and wife, Karen of Lafayette, and Lorna Lavergne of Lafayette, brother Kenneth Lavergne, Sr., of Opelousas, and sister Libbye Crump of LaPlace, Louisiana. His seven grandchildren are Matthew, Andrew, Aaron, Megan, and Brandon Lavergne, Amy Deaville, Amanda Marcell, and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Shirley Beaugh Lavergne, parents Joseph and Louise Sibille Lavergne, second parents Numa and Mathilde Lavergne, siblings Irma Quirk, Lillian Barry, L.J. Lavergne, Roslyn Soileau, Bernard Lavergne, and Eugene Lavergne.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Matthew, Andrew, and Aaron Lavergne and nephews Al Castille, Scott Sonnier, and Joe Lavergne. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Fontenot, nephew Johnny Sonnier, and Jordan Pearson.
The family is deeply grateful to Paula and her husband, Charlie Pearson, for the wonderful care given to Dad as he lived the last sixteen months of his life in their home. Special thanks go to Charlie for his medical attention to the needs of his father-in-law. The family would like to thank Hospice of Acadiana for their gentle and loving care and Debra Morgan, his sitter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carrol's name to the non-profit Hospice of Acadiana at www.hospiceacadiana.com or Wounded Warriors of America at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
