Opelousas - Funeral services for Mrs. Birdie Lee Bihm Lewis will be held at 11 A.M. on Tuesday May 12, 2015 at the Sibille Funeral Home Chapel in Opelousas, LA. Interment will follow in the Waxia Cemetery in Waxia, LA, with Rev. Benny Reppond officiating.
Mrs. Lewis passed away on Thursday May 7, 2015 in Hammond at the age of 91. She was a native of Port Barre, a past resident of Jefferson, La., and was currently a resident of Port Barre. She attended Acadia Baptist Academy and graduated from Mississippi College with a degree in Education. She earned her Masters Degree in Library Science from LSU in Baton Rouge. She was a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Genealogical Society (local and state). She devoted her career to students while working as a school guidance counselor for 6 years and a school librarian for 12 years until her retirement.
Birdie is survived by her son, George Robert Lewis and wife Patricia of Hammond. She is also survived by six grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Burt Ernest Lewis, her son Clayton Edward Lewis, her parents Burice Bihm and Lelia Carrier Bihm, her brother Robert Louis Bihm, and her sister Lucille Tomlinson (wife of Rev. Alvin Tomlinson).
Pallbearers will be George R. Lewis, Charlie Lewis, Steven Bihm, Don McGuffie, Aaron Bergeron, and Billy McWhorter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mario Montagnino and Mike Quebedeaux.
Visiting hours will be held at the Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas on Monday May 11, 2015 from 4:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. On Tuesday, the visitation will resume at the funeral home beginning at 8:00 A.M. until 11 A.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Birdie's name to The Wounded Warrior Project.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of the Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care for their excellent services.
