Opelousas -A Mass of Christian Burial for Bernice Carriere Walkowiak will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017, at St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelousas. Fr. Jim Brady celebrate the Mass. Rite of Committal will follow in the St. Landry Cemetery.
Bernice passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2017 a Prompt Succor Nursing Home at the age of 93. She was a member of the Red Hatters, she was the owner of Bernice's Ceramics for 30 years. She enjoyed teaching ceramics, spending time with her family and friends, traveling, and especially helping people.
She is survived by her son, Gene Prejen and his wife, Nancy of Spring, Texas, step daughter, Linda Verrett of Sunset, sister, Yola Huckaby of Opelousas, grandchildren, Michael Prejean and Kristen Barta, and great grandchildren, Sydney and Dew Prejean, Berkley and Reagan Barta.
She was preceded in the death by her parents, Clement Carriere, Sr. and Eyola Deville Carriere, her husband, Theodore Walkowiak, step son, Charles, "Chuck" Walkowiak, brothers, Clement Carriere, Jr., and Russell Carriere, her sisters, Frances Noel, and Mary Cryer.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and will reopen on Monday at 8:00 a.m. until time of service. A Rosary service will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home on Sunday evening.
