A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, March 9, 2009 at 4:00 PM at the Estorge House, 417 North Market Street in Opelousas, for Barbara Jean Houser Hartley Bringman, age 68, who died at 2:50PM on Thursday, March 5, 2009. Rev. J. Peterson Smith with the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Opelousas, LA will conduct the service.
A native of Jackson, Michigan, Barbara was the daughter of Cora Walz and Claude Houser. She moved to Lafayette, LA in 1978, where she resided until her death.
A loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend, Barbara devoted her entire life to her family and friends. Following the death of her husband, Charles Frederick Hartley in 1967, she raised their her two young sons. From 1994-1998, she put her own life on hold to care for her ailing mother in Michigan. Following the death of her mother, she cared for her only sister, who resided with her.
An accomplished bowler, Barbara joined bowling teams in Michigan and Louisiana, winning many trophies and awards from local and national competitions. She loved to crochet and do other beautiful hand work. She also enjoyed an occasional trip to a casino.
At the time of her death, Barbara was employed by Wal-Mart on Ambassador Caffery Road in Lafayette, LA.
PBarbara is survived by one sister: Susan Houser of Lafayette, LA; two sons: Jay Norman Hartley and his wife, Robin Kline Hartley of Lafayette, LA; and Timothy Robert Hartley and his wife, Carola Lillie Hartley of Bridgeton, New Jersey; one step son: Bobby Bringman and his wife Cheryl Bringman of St. Martinville, LA; three grandchildren: Specialist Charles Jay Hartley stationed with the US Army in Iraq
