Alozia Marie St. Julien

May 29, 1957 — December 22, 2024

Alozia Marie St. Julien, beloved aunt, sister, friend, and very proud New Orleanian, died tragically and unexpectedly on December 22, 2024.

Alozia was born on May 29, 1957, in Lafayette, LA, the youngest child of Hilda and Alfred St. Julien, Jr. She was a proud graduate of both Northside High School in Lafayette and Southern University in Baton Rouge, excelling in drama and speech at both schools. Soon after college, she made New Orleans her home.

An extremely talented actress, Alozia starred in plays, television shows, and movies in both the United States and Europe, most famously appearing as Ellie Anne Jeffson in the NBC crime drama, In the Heat of the Night, alongside Carroll O’Conner and Harold Rollins, and in the feature film, Schultze Gets the Blues.

She was an amazingly kind and loving person who never met a stranger and who did her best to make everyone feel welcome and valued. She made “other peoples’ problems” her problems because if she learned another person was suffering or in need, she did everything in her power to bring them comfort and relief. Alozia retired from the State of Louisiana as a Child Welfare Specialist after many years of devoted service, but, always on the go, Alozia almost always had at least one other job in addition to her acting and volunteer work along with her service to her many friends and large family.

Alozia was preceded in death by her parents and by her siblings, Anna Bell Semien, Alfred St. Julien, III, Diane Guillory, and Christine Guillory.

She is survived by two sisters, Rita Papillion and Josephine Elliott, and by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She is also notably survived by her two special nieces, Melony Dean and Heather Mercadel, and her special nephew, Glenn Guillory, all of whom she helped raise, by taking them into her home after their mother died at a very young age. Their success in life is a testament to Alozia, who lived the true meaning of her Catholic faith in this and many other ways.

To know her was to love her. She sparkled and brought joy wherever she went, and those who know her have no doubt that she has taken her many talents to a bigger stage where she will now bring joy to heaven.

Funeral services will be held for Alozia at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 411 North Rampart Street, New Orleans, LA.
