Allen Joseph Smith
Opelousas Allen Joseph Smith 78, formerly of Washington, Louisiana passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2010, in the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. Mr. Smith was born on April 29, 1931, in Waxia, Louisiana. He is preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Louise Phillips Smith as well as, his parents, Paul Nolton Smith and Elva Dupre Peterson and a sister, Dorothy Smith.
Mr. Smith was a 1948 graduate of Washington High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving from 195054. Following the military, he spent a period of his life in Tulsa, Oklahoma, working for McDonnellDouglas, before returning to Louisiana where he eventually spent a career with Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company. Throughout his career, Mr. Smith was stationed at plants in Kinder and Crowley, Louisiana Hattiesburg, Mississippi and finally in Centerville, Tennessee, where he retired in 1989. At the time of his retirement, he was the Superintendent of the Centerville Plant.
He is survived by two children: Jerry Smith of Brownsburg, Indiana and Theresa Smith McCusker of Cordova, Tennessee as well as, four grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers: Earl J. Smith of Claremore, Oklahoma and Clarence W. Peterson of Pineville, Louisiana and a sister, Patricia Peterson Densmore of Katy, Texas.
Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5 to 9 pm, including a 7 pm Rosary Service at Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas, Louisiana. And will reopen on Friday morning at 8:00 a.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Friday, January 8, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Washington, Louisiana, with interment immediately afterward at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Washington. Fr Albert Nunez will celebrate the mass.
