Able G. Ortego
Opelousas Funeral services for Mr. Able G. Ortego, known to many as Sauce, age 78, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Bellevue Memorial Park. Father Paul Bienvenu will celebrate the Mass.
Mr. Ortego was a native of the Prairie Ronde area and was a long-time resident of Opelousas. He passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, October 16, 2009.
In the late 1960's, Mr. Ortego opened Ortego Citgo and later he opened Able's Mini Mart. He owned and operated them for over 40 years until his recent retirement.
Mr. Able was married to the love of his life, Mrs. Loretta Lejeune Ortego for 60 years. They truly enjoyed life together to the fullest. In his lifetime, he was a hardworking man who loved his career and spending time with his family and friends especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed being outdoors raising his cattle, hunting, and spending time relaxing at the camp. Every grandchild knew him as their Biggest Fan because he would actively attend all of their activities and functions. His businesses would proudly sponsor his grandchildren's baseball teams with lots of support. He was truly a people person and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta Ortego of Opelousas; four sons: Tommy Ortego and wife, Wilma of Port Barre; Russel Ortego and wife, Laura; Timmy Ortego and wife, Liz; and Tony Ortego and wife, Juli; all of Opelousas; six daughters: Diane Crader of Lake Charles; Debbie Ortego Broussard and husband, Bobby of Eunice; Peggy Faul and husband, Mike of Lawtell; Sheila Dupre and husband, Billy; JoAnn Castania and husband, Jimmy; and Stacey Richard and husband, Ronald, all of Opelousas; two sisters: Atra Brown of Metairie; and Helen Hebert of Houma; 27 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Amar Ortego and Tillya Deville Ortego; and two sisters: Merlin Aucoin and Laurabell Vidrine.
